Otoplasty

Since childhood you may have heard more or less unkind remarks about protruding ears. For a few years now, your child has very likely been getting the same treatment from others. Otoplasty can help you both! Otoplasty is the operation that reduces the distance between the ear and the head, and straightens, reduces and reshapes the ears. Don't let more time pass – book your operation!

When is the best time for otoplasty?

For children, the operation is recommended after the age of 4-5, before they become aware of their self-image, when they can cooperate reasonably well.

Adult candidates should be in generally good health, preferably non-smokers, with a positive attitude and realistic expectations.

What does the procedure involve?

Otoplasty takes about 1 hour. Local anesthesia or sedation will be needed, especially for children. You will not need to stay overnight, but for children it is beneficial to stay one night under medical supervision. For symmetry, both ears need to be operated on in most cases. At the end of the operation, an elastic compression bandage is applied, which you will need to wear all the time for several days, and then only at night to support healing.

How long does recovery take?

You can resume your activities 2-3 days after otoplasty. However, it is best to avoid excessive physical effort for a while. Children can go back to kindergarten or school after a week, but they should be watched carefully during the first month. For 6 weeks after the operation, protect your ears from extreme temperatures and avoid sleeping on your side, resting on your ear.

What are the risks of the operation?

The complications are those common to any operation (bleeding, hematoma, infections, etc.); in addition, there is a risk of asymmetry, skin irregularities and changes in skin sensation. I will give you all the details you need during the consultation, before you decide on the operation.

Keep in mind!

Otoplasty does not affect hearing.
